How to create a Screenshot and Screen Recording

If you run into any issues, we may ask you to share a screenshot of the error message or a screen recording with your developer tools open (How do I open the developer tools (or dev. inspector) in my browser?). This helps us understand what’s happening and find a solution for you as quickly as possible.

How to create a Screenshot and screen recording: 

Screenshot for Mac

  1. Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 4.

  2. Your cursor will change to a crosshair.

  3. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.

  4. Release the mouse or trackpad button to take the screenshot.

  5. The image will be saved to your desktop.

Screen Record for Mac

  1. Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 5 on your keyboard.

  2. The screenshot toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Select either:

    1. Record Entire Screen (the icon with a screen outline and a solid circle), or

    2. Record Selected Portion (the icon with a dotted box and a solid circle).

  4. If you choose Record Selected Portion, drag to select the area you want to record.

  5. Click Record to start recording.

  6. To stop recording, click the Stop button in the menu bar at the top of the screen (near the clock).

  7. The recording will be saved to your selected location (default is the desktop).

Screenshot for Windows: 

  1. Click Start, search for Snipping Tool, and open it.

  2. Click New in the top-left corner of the Snipping Tool window.

  3. Your screen will dim, and your cursor will change to a crosshair.

  4. Click and drag to select the area of the screen you want to capture.

  5. Release the mouse button to take the screenshot.

  6. The captured image will open in the Snipping Tool editor.

  7. From here, you can annotate, copy, or save the screenshot.

  8. To save it, click the Save icon (floppy disk) and choose a location and file name.

Screen record for Windows: 

  1. Click Start and search for Snipping Tool, then open it.

  2. In the toolbar, click the camera icon (this switches from screenshot mode to screen recording mode).

  3. Click New.

  4. Drag to select the area of the screen you want to record.

  5. Click Start in the small toolbar that appears.

  6. The recording will begin after a brief countdown.

  7. To stop recording, click the Stop button in the toolbar.

  8. A preview window will open. You can review the recording there.

  9. Click Save As to save the video to your desired location (it saves as an MP4 file).
